Book Club: Details
A couple of weeks ago, or so … I posted a bulletin about a book club that I considered starting, as well as inquired about other’s clubs that I can join. A few people were interested and wanted to join a club, but didn’t want to start one themselves. With those participants being split between coasts (Los Angeles and Manhattan) … I decided to start a bi-coastal club.
So here’s the deal:
Each month, someone in the club will suggest a book. The book’s genre, and subject matter is irrelevant … you can pick whatever book you want. This way, those who are avid readers will get a chance to diversify, and those who are not avid readers will get a sampling. — We’ll each have a month to read it (as long as the size of it is humanly possible to read casually in a month’s time, lol). At the end of the month, we’ll have dinner in Manhattan. Dinner in LA will be at the beginning of the next month. I will be at both, and anyone from LA is more than welcome to come to the NY dinner (and vice-versa).
Manhattan:
The dinner is split into two days. The first day is for the couples. We’ll meet at a gallery viewing, film, theatre, opera, or ballet and have dinner afterwards. Sometimes there will be wine tastings after dinner. In that case, we won’t be going to a gallery opening prior. — So if you have a husband, or boyfriend (etc), and that sounds like something the two of you would like to do together, you’re more than welcome to join. If we’re going to an opera but you dislike opera, you can always skip it and come straight to dinner. If you’re not in a relationship, but want to come … then bring a friend or something (which is what I will be doing).
The next day is for individuals, and there will not be anything prior to dinner. However, if during dinner we decide to do something together, that’s cool. Anyone who came the previous day is more than welcome to come the next day, just don’t expect it to be a couple’s atmosphere.
The cost pp each day is 60-80. When there are wine tastings, if there is a cover it’ll be around 120 pp (dinner plus the tasting). I tried to be considerate of other’s expenses, however, if you cannot afford that consistently but you would like to attend … let me know, and we’ll work it out.
Los Angeles:
For the LA meetings, each month I will secure a location. If you have a home that can accommodate 6-20 people, and are willing to have us, please let me know. You will not have to worry about entertaining, there will always be at least one chef in attendance, and I’ll help cook (but anyone else can also). — Couples, or individuals are welcome. The attendee expense will be 20-40 pp, to put towards groceries and wine (but you can bring a bottle if you’d like).
—
The atmospheres of the three dinners will be very different … and since the next book will be suggested by those in attendance, the books will quickly diverge. However, if you’re interested in attending all three dinners … and can keep up with three books, then knock yourself out.
I’m starting with a new brokerage / day trading firm in Jan, and will not be able to realistically do it during that time. As such, the first meeting will be at the end of Apr. — If interested, hit me back with your contact info (or email address), even if you think I already have it.
Til then, later.

Mr. Prasand, so is this book club still in the works?

No, I abandoned the idea when my reason for doing it ceased to be. I intended on being in LA regularly because my closest lover Bianca Paz wanted me to be, but after her Binibining Pilipinas competition she ended up staying in the Philippines because of job opportunities. She was only supposed to be there for three months, but life happens.
